SAC Section Bernina
The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) is organised in sections based on geographical areas. Our section, Bernina, is located in S.E. Switzerland and has over 850 members.

Our home area
Our name stems from Piz Bernina, the magnificant 4049m peak that towers above the Engadin, the most beautiful high-mountain valley in the Alps. Our area covers the Bernina mountain range, the Upper Engadin, and the Puschlav leading from the Bernina Pass to Italy. To find us on the map look for St. Moritz and Pontresina, two of Switzerland's most famous resorts.

Wide range of activities
Section Bernina has a full and varied program covering mountaineering, guided climbs, treks, walks, ski tours and social events. We have something for everyone, young and old, active and less active, in Summer and Winter. We maintain five well-equipped mountain huts, have a highly-professional mountain-rescue team, and even run a library at the Alpine Museum in Pontresina.

Membership open to all
Anyone over eight can join Section Bernina and there is no upper age limit. Although we are always pleased when members become active mountaineers, we also welcome nature lovers who prefer easy walks and leisurely activities. Interested? Just contact one of our members or take part in something that appeals to you.

A brief history
Section Bernina was formed in 1891 in Samedan, a small town close to St. Moritz. Although, initially, we had to follow the SAC's 19th-century male-only membership rule, we always had a very open attitude and often had women guests on our tours. In 1980 we united with the local section of the Womens Alpine Club to form the modern SAC Section Bernina, for men and women, boys and girls, for all who love our mountains and countryside.
