Day 4
Today it feels as if we have plunged into the glaciated heart of the Bernina massif. We retrace yesterday's path for a short distance, then take a path down to the milky glacial lake. Small blue-grey icefloes drift on the waters after calving noisily off from the glacier snout. A narrow trace of a path leads along the lakeshore. A short descent through the rubble of the moraines leads to level terrain. Here we see some hardy shoots of vegetation colonising the ground (2 hours).

Here there are two options:
.EITHER continue to follow the path towards the Hotel Roseggletscher ( with its dessert buffet!). Shortly before the hotel, the path leads across a wooden bridge. Then uphill to Chamanna da Tschierva (2.5 hours). The atmosphere here is one of busy preparation, given that the hut serves as the starting point for ascents of Piz Bernina via the Biancograt. This is the classic route on this easternmost 4000er of the Alps.

.OR climb down rightwards to a rope bridge at the confluence of the two glacier streams. Crossing this bridge may not be to everybody's taste. A mishap here can lead to an involuntary swim in the icy waters. For those with a sense of adventure, though, the crossing is a special experience. Then cross the trackless plain and up to the Chamanna da Tschierva.
