Day 5
The easy walk down Val Roseg takes us to Pontresina. Take the path at the first wooden bridge over the river, the Ova da Roseg, rather than the vehicle track, which is busy with horse-drawn buggies and mountain bikers. Here we meet all the people who are day-hiking in the Val Roseg. Of course, you can also take a horse-drawn buggy from the Hotel Roseggletscher to Pontresina or even hire a mountain bike for the same stretch. Just before you get to Pontresina, a path leads off to the right towards Morteratsch. Through the Taiswald and along beside the railway tracks to Morteratsch station. (You can also take the train from Pontresina.) If you want to skip Morteratsch, take the path through the woods to Chünetta, starting about a kilometre before Morteratsch station. We cross the railway track in front of the hotel and take the path for the Boval hut via the Chünetta.
The high-level path atop the side-moraine of the Morteratsch glacier is one of the most popular excursions in the upper Engadine. At every turn as the path winds up through the woods of Arolla pines, there is a fresh and enchanting view of the glacier and the icy faces of Piz Palü.
